Perinatal Depression: Signs and Causes in Soon-to-be Mothers

Those two pink lines brought a big smile to Sujata‘s face. After six years of marriage, she and Ravi were finally going to be parents. When she broke the news to Ravi, his joy knew no bounds.

While the whole family was waiting eagerly to welcome this cute little addition, time was flying.

With each passing day, Sujata was going through a lot of hormonal changes and fear which made her happy or sad any time of the day. She was unable to handle her emotions but she kept it to herself because she didn’t think anybody would understand.

Prenatal Depression

Ravi was noticing these changes in Sujata.

  1. She could cry on any little thing that never bothered her before much
  2. She had numerous mood swings
  3. She was tired all the time
  4. With the passing time, she became hypersensitive

That was the last red flag that alarmed Ravi.

He immediately took Sujata to her doctor for the opinions needed.

Her doctor told them that these were signs of Perinatal depression which is the depression during pregnancy that later transforms into postpartum depression.

Around 20% of women are affected by this kind of depression and it is often ignored by the family and women themselves.

Prenatal Depression

Causes could be:

  1. Genetic
  2. Hormonal
  3. Overthinking
  4. Fear of miscarriage

If left untreated, it can cause a serious impact on the mother and her child, like:

  1. Low birth weight
  2. Preeclampsia
  3. Maternal suicide

Sujata was given medications and counseling by her doctor which helped a lot in her healing and she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl soon after this problem.

Not every Sujata has a Ravi who notices these changes and will help. You need to be aware of every aspect of your life. It is always said ‘listen to your body’ as nobody can understand you better than yourself. Self-love must be a priority. Love yourself and hope for the best always.
