World Water Day: Catch The Rain Campaign By PM Narendra Modi

“Bengali community has a proverb that says that life is the other name for water.” Indeed, without water, we would cease to exist.

Earth is 71% water and human bodies contain 60% water. Thus, water is vital for life on the planet. However, humans need freshwater to conduct their daily activities, and not salt water.

To make people aware of the importance of freshwater, the United Nations celebrates March 22, each year, as World Water Day. And this year’s theme is: ‘Valuing Water’. An event will be conducted through a webinar where the UN World Water Development Report 2021 will also be presented.

To address the issue of the water crisis, Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has launched the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain’ campaign, which aims to ”conserve rainwater when it falls, where it falls so that water reaches every corner of the nation.” The Prime Minister launched the campaign at 12:30 pm today through video conferencing. Check it out below.

‘Catch the Rain’ campaign will focus on water security, and it will go on from March 22 to November 30, covering the pre-monsoon and monsoon season in the country.

Ken-Betwa Link Project:

On the occasion of World Water Day, the Minister of Jal Shakti and the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh signed the historic Memorandum of Agreement(MOA) to implement the Ken Betwa Link Project.

This is the first project of the National Perspective Plan for the interlinking of rivers. Under this project, water will be transferred from the Ken to the Betwa Rover through the construction of the Daudhan Dam and a canal linking the two rivers.

It will provide annual irrigation of 10.62 lakh hectare, drinking water supply to about 62 lakh people, and also generate 103 MegaWatt of hydropower.

The PMO also said that this project will be of immense benefit to the water-starved region of Bundelkhand, especially to the districts of Panna, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Sagar, Damoh, Datia, Vidisha, Shivpuri, and Raisen of Madhya Pradesh and Banda, Mahoba, Jhansi and Lalitpur of Uttar Pradesh.

PM Modi also announced that after the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission, “about 4 crore new families have got tap connection in such a short time.” “Just one and a half years ago, out of 19 crore rural families in our country, only 3.5 crore families used to get water from the tap,” he said during the launch.

It will pave the way for more interlinking of river projects to ensure that scarcity of water does not become an inhibitor for development in the country,” the PMO said.

Conclusion

Water conservation is a big thing that involves using water sources judiciously. Every drop that you save counts. Water conservation doesn’t have to be something that we think about once in a while, but rather it needs to be a way of life. If we all do our part in conserving water, we can make a huge difference for the environment.
